Portofino Afternoon

40" X 30"

This is the side of the harbor that gets the afternoon sun. Portofino is an amazingly small place. We are talking about a little harbor that is in the shape of a horseshoe. But in this particular painting, "Portifino Afternoon" as the title indicates, this is the side that gets the afternoon sun. The buildings are all painted in warm colors and it is reflected into the water and contrasted against the boats. If you look you will see the water is not a mirror image of the buildings. There is a lot of activity occurring because the boats have come in or gone out so the water is agitated. The attraction about doing reflections is that no two are alike when, the sun is shining it looks one way, if the sun is not shining it looks another way. When it is still or, when it is agitated by the boats coming in it changes. Sometimes if you paint it exactly right it looks like the water is moving. Sometimes you have to paint buildings and boats slightly differently than you normally would, because boats are moving and the buildings remain still.
